SUMMARY:PsychEng Seminar Reservation: Prof Michael Mack - The computations\
, representations\, and neural dynamics of learning
DESCRIPTION:Prof Michael Mack (Psychology)\nThe computations\, representati
ons\, and neural dynamics of learning\n\nThe learning brain faces a comple
x challenge: new information must be evaluated and integrated into flexibl
e knowledge structures to support novel decisions. Characterizing the dyna
mic coordination of learning’s component processes is key to understandi
ng how we best learn and requires an approach grounded in psychological th
eory\, mathematical formalism\, and neural mechanism. In this talk\, I wil
l describe this multidisciplinary approach to cognitive neuroscience by pr
esenting two studies that target the learning brain. First\, I will highli
ght the role of selective attention in learning by showing how our ability
to focus on goal-relevant information dynamically shapes neural represent
ations of category knowledge. Second\, I will present a new study that aim
s to characterize how brain networks drive successful learning. Collective
ly\, these findings support a neurocomputational framework for learning an
d decision making that highlights the mutual interaction of selective atte
ntion and knowledge formation. I will conclude with a discussion of ongoin
g and planned research that leverages this framework to investigate broade
r questions at the intersection of psychology and engineering including op
timizing real-world decisions to improve waste sorting and identifying the
neurocognitive impacts of indoor air quality.\n\nWhen: Tuesday 13 Novembe
