SUMMARY:PsychEng Seminar: Human-in-the-loop vehicle simulation with an emph
 asis on control and training
DESCRIPTION:Human-in-the-loop vehicle simulation with an emphasis on contro
l and training\nProfessor Peter Grant\, University of Toronto Institute fo
 r Aerospace Studies\n\nDate: Thursday\, March 8\, 2018\nTime: 12:30-2 pm\n
Location: Sidney Smith 560A\n\nPilot Training\, and in particular training
in flight simulators\, is a multi-disciplinary field that is ripe for coo
perative research involving psychologists\, engineers\, neuroscientists an
d others. Most of today’s commercial aviation pilot training is done in
a virtual world (a flight simulator) with the intent that it transfers wel
l to the real world. Unfortunately\, just about all the cues in the simula
tor differ from those in the real world and the impact of those difference
s on transfer of training are still the subject of debate and research. Th
is talk will focus on a number of simulator fidelity projects that the Uni
versity of Toronto Institutes for Aerospace Studies vehicle simulation lab
has been involved with that are of particular interest to psychologists.
The impact of gravito-inertial motion cue fidelity on human-in-the-loop co
ntrol\, motion perception\, and ultimately transfer of training will be di
scussed. In addition\, the talk will cover some recent work on upset recov
ery training that is of particular interest due to upcoming changes to the
regulations for pilot training. While the training is mandated to start i
n the near future the impact of the training is still hotly debated.\n\nPl
ease RSVP by Monday 5 March 2018 to be included in the catering order.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Plants\, carbon dioxide\, indoor air and psychology\nProfessor

 neering Research Group\n\nDate: Thursday\, April 5\, 2018\nTime: 12:30-2 p
m\nLocation: Sidney Smith 560A\n\nExposure to contaminants indoors is the
largest environmental hazard for most Canadians. However\, indoor air qual
ity\, especially private indoor air quality\, is largely unregulated and i
gnored. Globally\, there are many researchers addressing technical aspects
of indoor air: sources\, fate and transport\, air cleaning\, and ventilat
ion are all vibrant areas of research. Most research on indoor air quality
is focussed on pollutant concentrations and the health effects that resul
t from those exposures. There are also very important effects that affect
well-being\, productivity\, decision-making\, and learning that have recei
ved much less attention. This presentation focuses on two specific examples
: the role of carbon dioxide in decision-making (e.g.\, Satish et al.\, 20
12\, Environ Health Persp.) and the role of plants on occupant perceptions
(e.g.\, Nieuwenhuis et al.\, 2012\, J. Exp. Psych) with the overall goal
of exploring collaborations between indoor environmental quality and psych

SUMMARY:PsychEng Seminar Reservation: Prof Michael Mack - The computations\
, representations\, and neural dynamics of learning
DESCRIPTION:Prof Michael Mack (Psychology)\nThe computations\, representati
ons\, and neural dynamics of learning\n\nThe learning brain faces a comple
x challenge: new information must be evaluated and integrated into flexibl
e knowledge structures to support novel decisions. Characterizing the dyna
mic coordination of learning’s component processes is key to understandi
ng how we best learn and requires an approach grounded in psychological th
eory\, mathematical formalism\, and neural mechanism. In this talk\, I wil
l describe this multidisciplinary approach to cognitive neuroscience by pr
esenting two studies that target the learning brain. First\, I will highli
ght the role of selective attention in learning by showing how our ability
to focus on goal-relevant information dynamically shapes neural represent
ations of category knowledge. Second\, I will present a new study that aim
s to characterize how brain networks drive successful learning. Collective
ly\, these findings support a neurocomputational framework for learning an
d decision making that highlights the mutual interaction of selective atte
ntion and knowledge formation. I will conclude with a discussion of ongoin
g and planned research that leverages this framework to investigate broade
r questions at the intersection of psychology and engineering including op
timizing real-world decisions to improve waste sorting and identifying the
neurocognitive impacts of indoor air quality.\n\nWhen: Tuesday 13 Novembe

SUMMARY:PsychEng Seminar Reservation: Prof Michael Grüninger - Ontologies
 for the Physical Turing Test
DESCRIPTION:Prof Michael Grüninger (Mechanical &amp\; Industrial Engineeri
ng\, University of Toronto)\n\nOntologies for the Physical Turing Test\n\n
The Turing Test was originally proposed as a way of evaluating how well a
software system represents human intelligence\, based on natural language
conversations. More recently there has been discussion about generalizatio
ns of the Turing Test to include other aspects of intelligence\, such as p
erception\, reasoning\, and action. The Physical Turing Test combines thes
e ideas into challenge problems based on the interaction between intellige
nt agents and the physical world\, such as building objects from a set of
parts using verbal\, written and illustrated instructions. In this talk\,
we will explore the ontologies that are needed in order to successfully bu
ild systems that can pass the Physical Turing Test.\n\nWhen: Tuesday 4 Dec

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Elaine Biddis (Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical

“Kids love video games. Kids hate boring therapies. Let’s use video ga
mes for therapies!” But\, can video games be used for motor therapy in a
way that truly engages children or are they just “chocolate covered bro
ccoli”? In this talk\, we will discuss the design of therapy games and i
nterventions through the lens of three contemporary theories of motivation
 : self-determination theory\, expectancy-value theory\, and social cogniti

of Botley’s Bootle Blast\, a video game for motor therapies designed by

SUMMARY:PsychEng Seminar Reservation: Prof. Jonathan Rose and Daniel Di Mat
teo - Using Behaviour to Measure Aspects of Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jonathan Rose and Daniel Di Matteo (Electrical and Comput
er Engineering\, University of Toronto)\nUsing Behaviour to Measure Aspect
s of Mental Health\nWe will describe two on-going projects that use two di
fferent ways to observe behaviour of people as a way to infer aspects of t
heir mental health. The first method collects behaviour passively by recor
ding a number of things from the subjects’ smartphone: their location\,
screen activity\, motion\, ambient light and samples of the ambient sound.
We will discuss our first steps towards collecting and processing this in
formation\, and correlation with several common psychiatric scales. The se
cond method is to have subjects play a game that evokes uncertainty\, and
to see if the subject’s behaviour in the game correlates with their ‘I
 ntolerance of Uncertainty’ scale.\n\nWhen: Tuesday 5 March 2019\, 12:10p

SUMMARY:PsychEng Seminar Reservation: Prof. Craig Chambers - Engineering in

  real language in real time
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Craig Chambers (Psychology\, University of Toronto)\nEng
ineering in reverse: How AI and humanoid robotics help reveal how real hum
ans process real language in real time\nSpoken language interfaces are an
increasingly common element in advanced technologies designed for use in e
ducation\, companionship\, and elder care.  To what degree do these inter
faces align with our current understanding of the perceptual and cognitive
processes underlying real-time language processing?\n\nAlthough the proce
ssing of language by humans might at first glance be thought to involve a
series of highly automatized mental operations\, the past two decades of p
sycholinguistic research have highlighted important ways in which core asp
ects of processing are influenced by social cognition.  As speech unfolds
at the millisecond level\, listeners draw on various sources of informati
on to generate and dynamically update implicit assumptions about a convers
ational partner's intentions\, and use this knowledge to guide their analy
sis of the acoustic input.\n\nIn this seminar\, I will describe the bidire
ctional relationship between this "basic science" work and engineering eff
orts in artificial intelligence.  Although experimental studies of situat
ed communication can provide guidance for the design of automated systems\
, engineering quandaries and solutions often shine a spotlight on issues t
hat have been largely overlooked in psychology\, in turn stimulating new l
ines of empirical research.  I will illustrate these interconnections in
a series of studies exploring the processing of task-related instructions
in contexts involving children\, younger and older adults\, and social rob
 ots.\n\nWhen: Tuesday 26 March 2019\, 12:10pm-1:30pm\n\nWhere: Room 370\,

DESCRIPTION:Cognitive Assessment of Executive Functions using Serious Games
\n\nIn this presentation\, Professor Mark Chignell will review several yea
rs of work on developing serious games for cognitive assessment with parti
cular focus on executive functioning. Professor Chignell will start by rev
iewing a game that he has developed for delirium screening in emergency de
partments\, with Dr. Jacques Lee of Sunnybrook and Mt. Sinai hospitals.\n\
nHe will then discuss a battery of serious games that he and his team are
developing with Dr. Bruce Morton of Western University. They currently hav
e a set of six games implementing six different psychological tasks (cogni
 tive speed\, response inhibition\, working memory\, cognitive flexibility\
, spatial attention\, delayed match to sample)\, but with a common whacamo
le game design.\n\nHe will provide demos of each of the games and he will
also present BrainTagger\, a social media-friendly version of the game tha
t they are using to collect normative data for different age groups. He wi
ll present experimental data showing that his response inhibition game is
highly correlated with the Go/No-Go task\, a standard psychological measur
e of response inhibition.\n\nHe will then discuss his plans for using fMRI
brain scanning while playing the games to validate the types of brain act
ivation that are produced by playing each of his games. After the presenta
tion\, he would like to have a discussion on the role of serious games in
cognitive assessment\, and the benefits of having frequent cognitive asses

propelled our understanding of both human and machine vision: We can desc
ribe much of the neural mechanisms of human visual perception\, and state-
of-the-art machine vision can detect objects with high accuracy. Yet resea
rch on both human and machine vision lacks a detailed understanding of how
visual features are grouped with each other and linked to the rich detail
s of meaning that humans naturally assign to visual information. Such grou
ping is believed to be essential for the fast\, efficient parsing of visua
l information by decreasing the computational complexity of this process.\
n\nThe human brain manages to group the primordial soup of visual features
that make up a complex scene into meaningful objects. Several heuristic r
 ules\, including symmetry\, parallelism\, proximity\, and similarity have
been known as key aspects of grouping visual parts into meaningful units s
ince the late 19th / early 20th century Gestalt (German for “form”) ps
ychology. While Gestalt grouping laws have been shown to work empirically\
, almost nothing is known about why they work and how they are computed an
d used. I will present initial results and future plans for discovering ex
ploring grouping principles that span computational vision\, psychophysics
 \, and neuroimaging.\n\nBiography:\n\nHaving been trained as a physicist a
nd computer scientist\, Dirk Bernhardt-Walther earned a Ph.D. in Computati
on and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology in 2006\,
working with Christof Koch on modeling visual attention and object recogni
tion. After a brief stint with John Tsotsos at York University in Toronto
he became a Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow at the Beckman Institute at the Un
iversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There he worked with Diane Beck
and Fei-Fei Li on natural scene perception and on decoding natural scene c
ategories from fMRI data. From 2010 until 2014\, Dr. Bernhardt-Walther was
an Assistant Professor of Psychology and from 2012 until 2014 Associate D
irector of the Center for Cognitive and Brain Sciences at The Ohio State U
niversity. In 2014\, he moved to the University of Toronto\, where he is n
ow Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology. In his work Dr. Be
rnhardt-Walther aims to decipher the neural mechanisms that underlie the p
erception of complex real-world scenes and on advancing methods for multiv
ariate analysis of neuroimaging data. Currently he is a Visiting Professor
at the Samsung Artificial Intelligence Center in Toronto.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nC

ence\, partly because of the improved skills to control the vehicle\, but
also because of the improved capability to distribute attention\, even whe
n distracted. A series of empirical studies will be presented evaluating y
oung drivers’ attention allocation both for manual driving (i.e.\, no or
low level of automation) and for high levels of vehicle automation.\n\nSt
udies evaluating different distraction mitigation techniques for young dri
vers’ manual driving will also be presented.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nBio\n\nProfes

DESCRIPTION:Analysis of Designer Performance and Emotion in Collaborative a

 12:10pm-1:30pm\n\nRoom 2135\, Bahen Centre for Information Technology\, 40
  St George St\, Toronto\, ON M5S 2E4\n\nAbstract\n\nComputer-Aided Design
(CAD) software is an important tool in the engineering designer’s toolbo
 x. Recent technological advances have led to promising cloud-based collabo
rative CAD systems (i.e. the “Google Docs” of CAD). Yet\, little work
has been done to consider how designers design together using these new to
ols\; we do not yet know if collaborative CAD leads to higher quality outp
uts\, faster design times\, happier designers\, or more creative products.
A series of studies will be presented evaluating the impact of collaborat
ive CAD tools and collaboration configuration on various dimensions of pro
ductivity. Further\, the link between designer emotion and action is explo
red using automated facial emotion detection software and cursor tracking
of corresponding designer activities.\n\nBiography\n\nAlison Olechowski is

n relies on clinician’s interviews and self-reported questionnaires. The
se techniques suffer from inter-observer variability and are often affecte
d by communication difficulties. Analysis of visual scanning patterns is a
method that can help to objectively characterise patients with psychiatri
c disorders. A series of paradigms and methods that are based on the analy
sis of visual scanning behaviour in patients with mood disorders\, eating
disorders and Alzheimer disease will be presented.\n\nBiography\n\nDr. Eiz

SUMMARY:RSVP PsychEng Seminar by Student\, Tues 2021 Feb 9 : Technology wit

DESCRIPTION:\nRSVP for PsychEng Seminar by Student: \nTuesday\, February 9\
, 2021\n12:05pm-1:30pm\n\nTechnology with a Face: A Future with Social Rob
 ots\nShane Saunderson\, MIE PhD Student\n\nAbstract: Robots have already h
ad a massive impact on our world and\, as we learn to make them more socia
l\, are poised to evolve our hospitals\, schools\, businesses\, and homes.
However\, given the potential for these robots to change the very fabric
of our society\, interactions\, and even our understanding of ‘self’\,
we have a responsibility to approach their deployment in a considered and
collaborative way. This seminar will look backwards at the impact of hist
orical “social technologies”\, review current research to understand t
he present implications of social robots\, and speculate on the future of
evolving social automation. In doing so\, this seminar will push attendees
to think about their role in the development and deployment of new techno
logies to ensure that tomorrow’s tech is aligned with the needs\, desire
s\, and norms of people\, not dictated by the art of the possible or fetis
hization of new gadgets. Technology can bring with it great change – goo
d and bad – and technology with a face\, even more so.\n\nBiography: Sha
ne Saunderson received a B.Eng. in mechanical engineering from McGill Univ
ersity in 2005 and a M.B.A. in technology and innovation from Ryerson Univ
ersity in 2011. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate studying social Human-Ro
bot Interaction under Prof. Goldie Nejat within the Autonomous Systems and
Biomechatronics Laboratory (ASBLab) in the Department of Mechanical and I
ndustrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. Shane holds a Vanier C
anada Graduate Scholarship and is a Junior Fellow with Massey College. His
research focuses on psychological influence caused by robots during socia
l interactions with particular interest in topics such as persuasion\, tru
st\, and authority.\n\nWhere: Zoom\n\nFor Zoom meeting ID and passcode ple
